Excerpted from the FSR article “Declaration of Independents” (FSR’s annual list of Top 100 Independents highlights leading operators in the state capitals): “Put political buzz and party affiliation aside – this year the spot light focuses on the top independent operators in state capitals throughout the U.S. A number of factors contributed to the reasons these restaurants were recommended: Food, beverage, and hospitality were clearly considerations, as were community engagement and giving back to the industry. In most cases we received a long list of worthy contenders. Curating the list down to the 100 most notable was a labor of love and arduous research, but the end result is a collection of notable restaurants. All of these restaurants are strong players in their cities and have garnered local, regional, and, in some cases, national recognition. Madison’s Café: Open for 34 years, Madison’s Café offers relaxed yet elegant dining, which features Italian and American fare with global influences. The menu changes often to reflect seasonable availability and the restaurant’s long-established relationships with local growers and farmers. In addition to using locally sourced products, Madison’s Café uses herbs from its own garden. The restaurant only serves sustainable fish, and offers gluten-free fare and a wide variety of vegetarian choices. The newest menu item, Cioppino, has been added to its signature dish listing. 2016, Madison’s  was highlighted in a  March article by Travel Writer, Blogger, Traveling Mom, Becky Davenport about her Amtrak trip to Jefferson City, and visit to Madison’s. ” Family Friendly, Food Fun Trip to Jefferson City: Italian Feast at Madison’s Café:  Located in the heart of historic downtown Jefferson City, Madison’s is casual yet elegant norther Italian fare at its best.  I have eaten Italian before,  In fact, I have eaten at Madison’s Café before.  Yet, this is the kind of restaurant you can go  to over and over and try something new every time.  Our family is on a mission to sample new dishes, step outside our comfort food world, if you will, so we ordered mussels, with some coaxing from the owner, Rob, and we liked them so much!  Madison’s serves authentic Italian food, but the food is equal to the wonderful service!  Eat Drink and Be Merry – if you are not merry when you arrive, the staff will make sure you are before you leave!  They greet you with a smile, spoil you with good food, and even the owner makes his rounds to check on his guests – I dig that!  Madison’s could be considered upscale, but I felt right at home with a 12 year old and 8 year old in tow, casually dressed after a train ride to Jefferson City.”

Accompanied by olive oil grilled sourdough bread point-a seafood lovers dream.”
